How to transfer Motor Vehicle ownership in Kenya

The transfer process is the change of ownership of a motor vehicle from current owner (Seller) to a new owner (Buyer). Ownership can be transferred because of Sale, Donation or Succession. To facilitate the process both seller and buyer must activate their E-Citizens accounts. The Seller is required to initiate the transfer process by;

THE SELLER

  • Login into E-Citizen account
  • Select NTSA service portal (New)
  • For organizations click on switch accounts
  • Go to motor vehicle tab and select vehicle then view
  • Select motor vehicles services, vehicle transfer then click on apply
  • Scroll down and click on choose file to upload an original logbook colour (PDF)
  • Select type of ownership and enter details of new owner
  • Submit to pay for the transfer of ownership
  • Click on home page to accept the Consent notification

THE BUYER

  • Login into E-Citizen account
  • Select NTSA service portal (New)
  • Click Home page to accept/decline the Consent notification
  • Fill in the required details then click preview
  • Scroll down and tick the declaration box
  • Submit for approval

Charges:    Depend on CC rating of the motor vehicle

Timelines:  3 working days

A vehicle shall not change ownership if:-

  1. Duty has not been paid (except with Diplomatic cases),
  2. Caveat has been placed on the vehicle,
  3. Car is charged to a financier (in respect of a loan/asset financing),
  4. There is a dispute of any kind, e.g. estate matters, marital, etc.
  5. Vehicle is reported as stolen.

Transfer application is processed at all regional offices and at NTSA Head Office.
