AA Kenya has announced the second edition of the Best Young Driver Contest (BYD 2024), which will take place across the country. The contest, held in collaboration with the FIA (Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) aims to raise Road Safety awareness among young drivers and highlight their potential to drive responsibly, and set a positive example to their peers and adults alike.

“This competition is not a sporting event but an opportunity for drivers to demonstrate their driving skills in a circuit that encompasses various forms of driving conditions, including cornering, muddy roads, tarmac, maneuvering hurdles, reversing vehicles in diverse road conditions, and driving on off-road terrain. AA Kenya will provide the vehicles for use in this exercise; however, contestants must possess valid driving licenses and pass theory tests before being allowed to participate,” said Francis Theuri, the Group Managing Director of AA Kenya, during the launch of the contest.

This year, the event will be held regionally to provide an opportunity for young drivers across the country to showcase their unique skills and make the contest tougher to determine who will emerge the best young Driver. The regional events will be held are Nairobi, Kisumu, Mombasa, and Eldoret, with the qualifiers competing in the Kenya finals at the Whistling Morans in Athiriver.

The contest is open to young drivers of the age of 18-26, who possess a valid driving license. The first part is an online test where contestants will be tested on their theoretical knowledge of driving. If you fall in this category and are up for the challenge, click here to Register.

This will be followed by the regional driving competitions, where contestants will drive through different road conditions.

Those who qualify from the regional competitions will proceed to finals, in a contest that will determine the two top drivers who will represent Kenya internationally.

Two winners of the Kenyan contest will represent Kenya in the global championship to be held in Belgium in October 2024 with other awards to be won among the top winners.

The 2023 global Best Young Driver contest in Austria

The Best Young Driver contest is gaining ground despite just beginning last year. The winners of last year’s contest represented Kenya in Austria. They also received recognition locally as they were feted in the Kenya Motorsports Federation Annual Awards 2023.

In Kenya, children and youth account for a significant proportion of road traffic-related fatalities. The Best Young Driver Contest aims to instill road safety awareness among all drivers, with a specific focus on young drivers, who often face a higher risk on the roads. Raising a generation of road-safe drivers will ensure that all road users are safe, and the rate of accidents will significantly reduce.
