Kenyans planning to drive abroad can now apply for the International Driving Permit (IDP) online, making the process faster and more convenient for travellers preparing for work, study, or leisure trips.
The IDP is only issued in Kenya by AA Kenya and allows motorists to drive legally in more than 150 countries. It serves as an official translation of a valid Kenyan driving licence and is recognised by traffic authorities, car rental companies, and insurers in many parts of the world.
To meet rising demand for global mobility, AA Kenya has simplified the application process through an online platform that enables drivers to apply from anywhere in the country.
Step-by-step online application process
1. Visit the official application portal
Applicants begin by accessing the official IDP website at https://aakidp.aakenya.co.ke. The portal provides guidance on eligibility and required documents.
2. Complete the online application form
Drivers fill in their personal details and driving licence information as required on the form.
3. Upload required documents
Applicants upload clear digital copies of:
• A valid Kenyan driving licence
• A passport-sized photograph
• A national identity card or passport
All documents must be clear and current to avoid processing delays.
4. Select collection or delivery option
Applicants choose their preferred collection point or delivery method, depending on the service option selected.
5. Make payment online
Payment for the permit is completed through the online system, allowing the application to be finalised without visiting a physical office at the initial stage.
6. Application processing and issuance
Once submitted, the application is processed by AA Kenya and the IDP is prepared in its secure, passport-like format. The new permit includes enhanced security features and digital verification, enabling authorities abroad to confirm its authenticity without contacting Kenya directly.
