AA Kenya, in partnership with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), has launched a comprehensive boda boda training and licensing initiative dubbed ‘Boda License na Mia’, that aims to equip over one million unlicensed riders across the country with essential skills and knowledge to ensure safer roads and proper licensing.
The training program will cover defensive riding, road safety, emergency first aid, financial literacy, and customer service. The initiative is a response to the growing concern over the number of accidents involving boda boda riders.
“Most riders get into the sector informally and do not have the required professional training and licenses,” said Francis Theuri, Group MD of AA Kenya.
The campaign aims to address this issue by providing affordable training and licensing options. Riders can choose from various payment plans, including daily installments or a one-time payment. Upon completion of the training, riders will receive an AA training certificate and a license from NTSA.
“We all use boda-bodas, they support many micro and small enterprises as well as small-holder farmers,” said NTSA chairman Dr. Manoj Shah. “By investing in the training and licensing of boda boda riders, we hope to not only reduce accidents but also enhance the overall image of the sector.”
The boda boda sector is a significant contributor to Kenya’s economy, employing millions of young people and supporting countless small businesses. However, the alarming statistics on road accidents involving boda bodas cannot be ignored.
In 2023 alone, 1133 riders lost their lives in such accidents, accounting for 26% of total road fatalities.

By investing in the training and licensing of boda boda riders, AA Kenya hopes to not only reduce accidents but also enhance the overall image of the sector.
The campaign aligns with the government’s efforts to improve road safety and create a more conducive environment for all road users in the National Road Safety Action Plan 2024-2028.

Boda boda are a menace in traffic. They also organize themselves into gangs especially when one of them is involved in an accident.
How can AA, NTSA, and the police arrest this menace?
