Loxea, a subsidiary of CFAO Mobility, has introduced the BYD range of electric vehicles (EVs) to the Kenyan market, making it the first official sole distributor of the world-renowned models in Kenya.
The launch event was graced by Hon. Salim Mvurya, the Cabinet Secretary for Investments, trade & industry, and PS Abubakar Hassan Abubakar, signaling the government’s strong support for this green initiative.
The three EV models launched are the BYD Atto 3, BYD Seal, and BYD Dolphin which are high performance standards and zero emissions, each designed to meet the diverse needs of the Kenyan market.
The BYD Atto 3 is a versatile compact SUV, perfect for both urban commutes and off-road adventures. With a long battery range of up to 515 kilometers on a single charge, it’s ideal for daily driving and long-distance trips. The BYD Seal, on the other hand, is a sleek and sporty sedan that exudes luxury and efficiency. Its impressive range of 664 kilometers makes it one of the most efficient EV sedans in Kenya. For everyday commuters, the BYD Dolphin offers a balance of affordability, sustainability, and comfort with a range of 402 kilometers.
Kenya’s embrace of electric vehicles is gaining momentum, driven by several factors. The government’s supportive policies, growing environmental awareness, and economic considerations are all contributing to this shift. The country’s Vision 2030 blueprint and its commitment to the Paris Agreement emphasize sustainability and climate change mitigation, making the adoption of EVs a crucial step in achieving these goals.
Loxea Kenya Managing Director, Jennifer Kinyoe, expressed the company’s excitement about this new venture. “Diversifying into electric vehicles aligns perfectly with our mission to provide innovative and sustainable mobility solutions. We are thrilled to partner with BYD, a global leader in electric vehicles, as we pioneer a new era in Kenya’s automotive industry,” she said.
The transportation sector is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. The introduction of these EVs represents a significant step towards reducing pollution and promoting a cleaner environment. Electric vehicles produce zero tailpipe emissions, contributing to cleaner air, lower fuel costs, and reduced maintenance expenses.
Moreover, as Kenya continues to invest in renewable energy sources, EVs are poised to benefit from the country’s green energy transition.
CFAO Mobility Group CEO, Arvinder Reel, highlighted the economic and environmental benefits of electric mobility. “EVs offer a long-term cost-effective solution for businesses and individuals. With rising fuel prices, electric vehicles can reduce transportation costs and decrease reliance on fossil fuels,” he noted.
Beyond the vehicles themselves, Loxea is committed to supporting the growth of Kenya’s EV ecosystem. The company has partnered with Knight Energies to expand the country’s charging infrastructure, ensuring that EV owners have convenient access to charging stations across the nation.
The launch of the BYD range of electric vehicles marks a significant milestone for Kenya’s mobility sector. As the country continues to embrace sustainable practices, these vehicles offer a cleaner, more efficient, and environmentally friendly option for transportation.
