What’s hot on our roads? The cars Kenyans can’t get enough of

By Timothy Albrite

An observation of the vehicles on the road, and data from the Kenya Motor Industry  Association (KMI) reveal that Kenyans are buying more crossovers and large SUVs. However, only a few owners take their big SUVs off-road because today, these vehicles have become symbols of prestige and status.

Let’s talk numbers. Over 90% of cars on East African roads are pre-owned imports or what we refer to as grey imports with Japan and the UK being the key markets for these vehicles. But recently, we’ve started seeing more cars coming from new markets such as China, South Africa and even Australia.

So what’s hot on Kenyan roads? We explore the cars that Kenyans can’t get enough of:

  1. Toyota Land Cruiser Prado- all trims

Politicians, big shots, and anyone who’s made it rain seems to own a Prado. If you want to feel like royalty on Kenyan roads, the Prado is your ticket.

Beyond the flashy exterior, the Prado has a lot going for it. The ride is comfortable, the space is very generous and its handling on rough roads is good. Plus, it’s a Toyota – synonymous with reliability, a crucial factor for Kenyan drivers.

2. The Toyota Hilux and Toyota Probox

These two are the ultimate workhorse and serve different purposes from being a family car, business partner to being a government vehicle used by agencies such as KeNHa. If you’ve driven or you live between Meru and Nairobi, you definitely have a story to tell about either or both of these vehicles especially those ferrying miraa.

The Hilux is a rugged, go-anywhere pickup that is reliable and fast. The Probox on the other hand is a favourite among business owners and is often used as a multipurpose vehicle. It gets the job done. In some areas, it serves as a public transport vehicle carrying up to 12 passengers. Both these cars are practical and durable, traits that have made them beloved by many Kenyans.

If you’re looking for a car that does it all without breaking the bank, the Hilux and Probox are your go-to choices.

3. Mercedes Benz -GLE/GLC/ML Series

The GLE and GLS models as well as the Maybach GLS were an internet sensation before even becoming popular on our roads with their bounce feature. Today, they are popping up everywhere especially in the affluent streets of Kilimani, Lavington, Karen and the likes and for good reason.

Mercedes has managed to blend elegance with practicality, so you get the best of both worlds. The high ground clearance is perfect for navigating notorious potholes and rough roads. Also perfect for exploring new roads and adventures where their counterparts the lower ground clearance E class and C Class would not step on.

These cars are also for people with status who do not want to look like the crowd. They command respect as well and look good.

4. The 1500 cc Japan Gang (Premio/ Allion/ Auris/ Raum/ Ractis/ Axela) etc

Fuel efficiency and affordability are their superpowers. Reliable and easy on the wallet, they’re a popular choice for budget-conscious Kenyans.

These compact, fuel-efficient vehicles are everywhere. Whether in Nairobi’s streets or across country roads, you/’ll definitely spot them.

Their ease of maintenance makes them even better. They offer practicality without sacrificing comfort. They are a favourite among the middle class offering the perfect balance of affordability and reliability.

5. Tech Bros and their German Machines; Audi A5, A6, Q5, Mercedes C and E class, BMW 5 Series, and the likes

You know the tech bros. When they’re not wearing jeans and hoodies, they’re all about luxury, performance, and cutting edge technology.

Speed? Check. Safety? Check. Status? Double check. Fuel efficiency? Well, Meeeh, who cares when you’re driving a German machine that combines power, luxury, and comfort?

6. Hot Hatches (VW Golf GTI, R, Suzuki Swift RS0

The Volkswagen Golf GTI, Golf R and Suzuki Swift RS are the perfect cars for those who want a punchy drive without breaking the bank. Compact, sporty, and nimble, these cars bring the fun back into driving.

The Golf GTI is a legendary name in the hot hatch category, and in Kenya, it’s no different. With a turbocharged engine that packs a punch, it’s ideal for city driving and gives you the kind of ride that makes you want to go on a road trip just for the fun of it. The Suzuki Swift RS, on the other hand, is the budget-friendly alternative. Don’t let the small size fool you, it’s got spunk, and it’s got it in spades.

7. Subaru Forester

The Subaru Forester is that car you’ll find in every neighbourhood. It’s the car for people who like to think they’re cool & adventurers, even if their “adventures” consist of navigating Nairobi’s clogged traffic or heading out to Ngong hills, or the picturesque Tigoni for the weekend.

Known for its rugged reliability and all-wheel-drive capabilities, the Forester is the perfect combination of practicality and a dash of “I’m ready for anything.” Whether you’re tackling muddy roads or cruising down the highway, it’s a solid, dependable ride that keeps up with your busy lifestyle. And let’s not forget the hardcore Subaru fans, it’s got the cult following to prove it.

8. Mazda CX5

The CX5 has been the talk of town since it made entry into the Kenyan motoring scene because of its practicality, speed, affordability, and design.

It has also had many owners complain about overheating issues, diesel, and DPF issues among many other stories, that could make one steer clear of buying these cars. However, they are still a darling to many.

The sporty handling combined with a refined look has made it a popular choice among motorists.

9. Peugeot 208/308/3008

Once, Peugeot’s were everywhere on Kenyan roads, then they seemed to vanish. But now, like a phoenix rising from the ashes, the Peugeot is making a comeback. Models like the 208, 308, and 3008 are slowly but surely reclaiming their place in the hearts of Kenyan drivers.

The Peugeot 208 is compact and practical, perfect for the city commuter who needs a bit of flair. The 308 and 3008, on the other hand, bring a more luxurious vibe while still remaining practical. These Peugeots are stylish, comfortable, and they’ve got a European charm that’s hard to ignore. Kenyans are rediscovering what they’ve been missing, and Peugeot is slowly but surely making its way back into the mainstream.

10. Honda Fit, Toyota Vitz and Nissan Demio

When it comes to compact cars that punch above their weight, the Honda Fit, Toyota Vitz, and Mazda Demio are the trifecta that Kenyan drivers swear by. These cars are loved for their affordability, fuel efficiency, and versatility, everything a city dweller could ever ask for.

The Honda Fit is the perfect companion for anyone who needs a car that’s small enough to zip through traffic but spacious enough to carry a weekend’s worth of groceries, or even the kids and a couple of bags. It’s practical, efficient, and definitely a fan favourite for urban drivers.

Then, there’s the Toyota Vitz. This little gem is another favourite among Kenyans, thanks to its reliability and low cost of ownership. It’s the ideal choice for anyone looking to get the most out of their money.

And let’s not forget the Mazda Demio. It might not be the loudest car on the block, but it’s certainly one of the most efficient. With its sleek design, solid build, and economical running costs, the Demio has a steady following in Kenya. It’s the perfect balance of size and performance, making it a hit in the busy urban jungle.

These three cars are the go-to for anyone who wants a car that’s easy to manoeuvre, won’t break the bank, and still gets the job done.

11. Mitsubishi Pajero, Nissan Patrol, Land Cruiser V8, Toyota Prado, and Fortuner

Now we’re talking about the heavyweights—the kind of cars you see and think, “That’s a serious off-roading machine!” The Mitsubishi Pajero, Nissan Patrol, Land Cruiser V8, Toyota Prado, and Fortuner are the vehicles of choice for true adventurers, road warriors, and the ones who want to experience Kenya beyond the tarmac.

These SUVs aren’t just for showing off in the city. Nope, they’re built for the real stuff, off-roading, muddy trails, and navigating rugged terrain. In fact, many owners of these powerhouses are actually using them the way they were meant to be used: off the beaten path. Whether it’s an adventurous weekend of mud-splashing in the Mud 4 Fun events, or just driving through areas where roads are mere suggestions, these cars are designed to conquer it all.

A huge chunk of their owners understand that these vehicles aren’t just a statement on wheels—they’re made for the wild, for exploring Kenya’s diverse landscapes, from the hills to the coast. And honestly, this is a culture we’re here for. It’s refreshing to see these beasts being put to work for what they were designed for, instead of being parked outside the mall as a status symbol.

Here’s a quick breakdown of these legends:
