Since its debut in 2010, the Volkswagen Polo Vivo has dominated the South African and Sub-Saharan African markets as the best-selling passenger model, with over 425,000 units sold. To continue its success, Volkswagen has unveiled a refreshed version of the Polo Vivo, featuring significant updates in design, technology, and safety. The new model will be available in South Africa from September 2024.
Unmatched Appeal in the Entry-Level Hatch Market
The Polo Vivo has solidified its position as the leader in the entry-level hatchback segment, despite the regular introduction of new models. Known for its affordability, German engineering, and balanced attributes of safety, space, and comfort, the Polo Vivo sets an unparalleled benchmark in the market. The refreshed version is expected to strengthen its dominance, offering even greater value to customers.
Refreshed Interior and Exterior Features
The new Polo Vivo boasts a range of interior and exterior enhancements that elevate its appeal. Externally, the car features a redesigned front bumper, new headlights, and a sleek 2D Volkswagen badge. The rear end mirrors this design with a 2D badge and chrome-plated “Vivo” name. Fresh body colours and new interior seat materials further modernise the vehicle, while new equipment lines enhance the model’s distinct identity.
Interior Updates
Inside, the Polo Vivo offers a new infotainment system with a 9-inch Mirgor radio and App-Connect, ensuring seamless connectivity. Depending on the model, the system includes four to six speakers. New interior trims across the Vivo, Life, Style, and GT lines bring a fresh ambience to the cabin. Safety has also been improved with the addition of front side airbags, standard on the Style and GT models.
Exterior Highlights
The exterior enhancements include black-painted mirror caps on the GT model, adding a touch of sophistication. New alloy wheels, available in sizes ranging from 14 to 17 inches, enhance both the vehicle’s aesthetic appeal and driving dynamics. Improved headlights, chrome accents on the grille, and optional features like a rear-view camera contribute to the Polo Vivo’s modern, refined look.
Safety and Performance
Volkswagen has not compromised on safety, with standard features such as Electronic Stability Control (ESC), hill start control, and remote central locking across the range. The Polo Vivo is powered by a range of efficient engines, including 1.4 and 1.6 MPI four-cylinder engines and a 1.0 TSI three-cylinder engine. These engines deliver power outputs ranging from 55 kW to 81 kW, paired with either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission. The top-of-the-range GT model offers a thrilling driving experience with its 81 kW engine and a fuel consumption rate of just 4.8 litres per 100 kilometres.
Kenyan Market
For the Kenyan market, the Polo Vivo Life version with a 1.6L petrol automatic engine is anticipated to arrive by Q4 2025. This model is expected to resonate well with local consumers, offering a blend of performance, comfort, and the reliability Volkswagen is known for.
The refreshed Volkswagen Polo Vivo is set to continue its reign as a market leader, offering enhanced features, safety, and performance that cater to the evolving needs of consumers in South Africa and beyond.
