FIA’s Youth and Mobility report unveils Gen Z priorities

The automotive industry is undergoing a massive transformation and the preferences and priorities of the next generation of drivers Gen Z are at the forefront of this change.

The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) has released its first-ever report on Youth and Mobility, providing a unique insight into the transportation preferences of the global Gen Z population. AutoNews magazine has obtained an excerpt from the report, shedding light on the perspectives of 16 to 25-year-olds across nine countries.

The insights from the report show how Gen Z think and feel about mobility. This information is crucial in shaping a more sustainable and affordable future for the next generation in matters mobility.

This data can be leveraged by governments to create transportation policies that align with the safety and sustainability concerns of Gen Z. The comprehensive survey, spanning Kenya, Germany, the USA, Australia, India, Mexico, Argentina, Spain, and China, encompassed 9,000 interviews with the target demographic. The findings offer a glimpse into the young generation’s evolving relationship with mobility and transportation.

Key Findings: Safety, Sustainability and Aspirations

Safety and sustainability emerge as the cornerstones of Gen Z’s mobility priorities. A whopping 38% of respondents emphasized the need for safer local transport, while 28% advocated for enhanced sustainability.

Car ownership remains a prevalent aspiration, with 51% of Gen Z respondents already holding a driving license. Notably, 33% of those without a license expressed intent to obtain one within the next five years, showcasing the enduring allureof personal vehicles.

The Significance of Car Ownership: A Symbolic Milestone

For 56% of respondents, owning a car is deemed a crucial life stage. The sentiment towards automobiles varies, with 54% considering cars as an extension of their home or a personal bubble, while 40% view car ownership as a necessity.

Public Transport vs. Car Ownership: Striking a Balance

While 57% stress the importance of improving public transport for local mobility, 51% express a desire for enhanced access to car ownership. Additionally, 48% advocate for improved access to shared means of transport, such as shared bikes or cars, underscoring the need for a diverse and flexible mobility ecosystem.

Transport Solutions for Essential Needs: Work, Education, and Services

The survey reveals that 64% of Gen Z consider transport solutions essential for employment, while 62% rely on them for education. Moreover, 59% utilize cars for accessing crucial services like healthcare and shopping.

Empowering Gen Z: Shaping the Future of Mobility

A remarkable 45% of respondents express an active interest in participating in shaping the future of transport solutions in their communities. Furthermore, 54% aspire to actively contribute to the development of safe and sustainable mobility options.
